On Monday, the Department of Agriculture put the Limaloa Farm under quarantine after the Kekaha Facility tested positive for white spot syndrome virus. Known as WSSV, it's a highly contagious and deadly disease for crustaceans. There is no danger to humans, even if you eat the shrimp. But, WSSV can wipe-out entire shrimp ponds. The Kekaha Farm had it once before in 2004 when it was operated by Cea-Tech. The quarantine forced Cea-Tech into bankruptcy. Limaloa Farms stopped all shipments as soon as the disease was detected on June 12 and will continue to do so until further notice. |
