While many high school students go on to college, tuition is an obstacle for some. A farm in Waianae is helping ease the way for students in their community. Mao Farm's internship is a win-win situation for the farm and these students. "We work at Mao and they help cover our tuition so we can go to college." They work 18 hours a week and get a $500 monthly stipend. Kamuela Enos says Waianae teens' life experiences make them perfect college candidates. After three years, the program is graduating its first interns and 25 more will enter this year. An intern in a former cohort painted this to acknowledge the family network that supports these students. "We remember our kupuna who came before us." The program broadens these students' view on their role in their community. Mahalo to Mao Farms for encouraging higher education and instilling community pride in Waianae. |
