Nestled in Manoa Valley is a treasure that has virtually gone unnoticed. Today we take you to Kukaoo. Right off Manoa Road is a heiau with quite an interesting history. "Kawelo came here from Kauai. Standing upon Konahuanui, he threw his spear down to the earth. This place became known as Kukaoo, 'pierced by the spear.'" While the Cooke family sold the property in recent history, when they heard of plans to have the land bulldozed for new homes, they sought to rectify the situation. "When they learned of this, they were moved to save this place. They didn't want to see it lost and they decided to buy back the land. They then asked Billy Fields to come restore the heiau." In addition to restoring the heiau, the Cooke's made sure the property was filled with native plants. This patch was planted by Sam and Mary and includes a variety of Hawaiian plants. There are perhaps 40 different types. For Hina, this place is special for what it offers its visitors. "I see this place as a sanctuary of sorts. There aren't many serene places like this in Honolulu." If you would like more information on this interesting site, go to www.manoaheritagecenter.org. |
