A familiar face on the Hawaiian music scene won big at the Na Hoku Hanohano awards this week. Thirty-three-year-old Hoku Zuttermeister, great-grandson of noted songwriter Kaui Zuttermeister and nephew of kumu hula Noenoe Zuttermeister, took home five awards including Album of the Year and Best Hawaiian Language Performance. The Hawaiian language award is a relatively new Hoku award. "It isn't enough to just sing. It is important to be skilled in various areas. There is an award for graphic arts and an award for engineering. So it is only appropriate to have a language award. The Hawaiian language and Hawaiian music are interdependent." "The language benefits from our mele. And I also think the language cultivates a growth in the playing of music, in the writing of songs, in all aspects of Hawaiian music." Mahalo to Hoku Zuttermeister and all the musicians who lift up our language through their beautiful music. |
