The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council has voted to delay the opening of the bottomfishing season in the main Hawaiian Islands. Instead of starting in September the season won't open until the middle of November. That gives scientists more time to assess the stocks from 2005 to 2007 and the risk of overfishing. They'll then set the limits for the 2008-2009 fishing season in October. The fishery closed for commercial and recreational anglers in mid April after reaching its allowable catch limits. |
