Movie Review: 'Bonneville' Print E-mail

Three talented actresses share the screen in "Bonneville." Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Joan Allen star in a road movie aimed at audiences over 50.

You simply couldn't ask for a better ensemble cast. Jessica Lange has won two Oscars. Kathy Bates, one. and Joan Allen has been nominated three times. This talented trio does make "Bonneville," very watchable, but they deserved a better script.

Lange plays Arvilla, the widowed second wife of an adventurous husband named Joe that we never see. Bates and Allen are her two closest friends. Now that Joe has died without a new will, Arvilla will lose the house they live in if she doesn't give Joe's ashes to the daughter he had with his previous wife. Christine Baranski plays the really nasty daughter who doesn't care that her father wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread in places he loved.

So the three friends take off from Idaho in Joe's red 1966 Pontiac Bonneville convertible to deliver his ashes to the daughter in Santa Barbara, but along the way most of the ashes wind up being scattered in beautiful places. Plus, Arvilla keeps taking her friends on side trips... to the Salt Flats, for example

The movie gives these three women some good chances to show their acting skills. Allen gets to play a prim Mormon who doesn't drink coffee let alone alcohol. Bates is a jokester looking for one last "man to take care of." And Lange is the grieving widow who still believes in fun. But the script itself is predictable and a bit contrived.

The audience might care more about Arvilla, for example, if the movie included a few scenes showing her relationship with Joe. Still, i enjoyed watching "Bonneville," and if you admire these terrific actresses, you probably will too. For everyone else, "Bonneville" will probably be less than truly satisfying.

By the way, if you're thinking of going to see one of the two new comedies that opened this weekend.....you should choose the very funny "Get Smart," starring Steve Carell, not the seriously unfunny "Love Guru," starring Mike Myers. I'll review "Get Smart" next week.
