Any extra airline costs just add to potential trouble for our visitor industry. The latest report shows our tourism numbers down to their lowest point in the last three years. The state released new tourism figures Thursday. Officials say while the numbers aren't good, they're actually a little better than expected. Last month Hawaii had about 549,000 visitor arrival by air. That's down a little more than six percent from the same time last year. There are fewer airline seats to the islands because of the recent Aloha Airlines and ATA bankruptcies. Air arrivals from the West Coast, East Coast and Japan are down, but travel from Canada is still increasing. The data also shows double digit declines in visitors coming to Hawaii to get married or for corporate meetings. Experts say its challenging time for tourist destinations nationwide.
"Prices are higher and the airlines are facing profitability issues because it's a nationwide phenomenon, it's not a Hawaii problem, really that it's all we can do is increase demand for our destination," said Pearl Imada Iboshi.
Tourism officials are looking to new markets for help. New agreements with China and Korea are expected to bring a surge in leisure travelers. |
