The owners of a new Beauty Academy and Wellness Center are infusing its spa treatments and teachings with lessons from their native Hawaiian upbringing. Christin Akaka Hall and Malia Sanchez are living a dream; owning their own Beauty School and Spa and doing it all with a Hawaiian sensibility. Hall and Sanchez met while their children were attending the same school. They quickly became friends and decided to blend Hall's business background with Sanchez's beauty field experience to open Makana Academy. Hall's brother Nalu says the way his sister runs her business reminds him of the way they both grew up surrounded by Hawaiian ideas and cultural practices. "The Hawaiian things we do outside Makana, diving, fishing, hunting, that's what being Hawaiian is and those same concepts are being used here." Makana Academy offers a 15-week course designed to prepare licensed estheticians. Hall and Sanchez teach their students not only about the industry, but also about the unique culture of Hawaii. Makana Academy is located on Waimanu Street in the Ala Moana area. For more information on their services, call 591-6090. |
