Firework Safety Urged for Fourth of July Print E-mail
June 27, 2008 07:40 PM

Fireworks for the Fourth of July holiday go on sale Sunday, and while lots of you enjoy fireworks they can be dangerous. We've all heard cases of people getting burned by fireworks. Even worse people have lost fingers, toes and been blinded when fireworks have gone off unexpectedly or have been thrown at people. With that in mind, the Honolulu Fire Department is urging everyone to be careful when celebrating Independence Day.

"Use only approved fireworks from a licensed retail outlet. Always read and follow the manufacturers listed warnings and instructions. Adults should always supervise children using fireworks, and never experiment with home made fireworks. They are dangerous and they are illegal," said Kenneth Silva.

Other safety always have a hose or bucket of water ready in the event of a fire. Wear protective eye gear when lighting fireworks. Never point or throw fireworks at people, animals, or buildings and never attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks.
