Today we visit another unique place named for a significant event or traditional story, this time in Hilo. Just above Hilo town are its three famous hills, Puuhonu, Peapea, and the focus of today's story, Halai. "In earlier times, these hills were clearly visible, unobstructed by overgrowth. But today, many things 'grow' here, including homes and paved roads." The main character in this story is Hinaikeahi, daughter of Hina who lived in Waianuenue. Hinaikeahi had supernatural powers and used them to help her people. "There was a time when Hilo was in famine and drought. Hina cared dearly for her people and told them to dig an imu." Her people were surprised because there was no food to cook in the imu. But they dug this huge imu nonetheless atop Halai. It was her next command that threw them. "She told them to cook her in the imu. They obeyed and covered the imu tight. When they opened the imu, it was filled with all kinds of food." They wondered what happened to Hinaikeahi. "Alas, she had disappearaed into the earth and surfaced down near the shore. Numerous springs bubbled and flowed all the way down toward the ocean, to Punahoa. And so this is how Hina provided food and water for her people during this lean time. Let us remember this place and its traditional story.
