"Since we teach here in Hawaii, we need to have the best strategies for educating our students." The most recent Kahuawaiola class includes the first teachers to be licensed for early childhood programs such as the Punana Leo. "Tradition says that when you care for a child, you assume full responsibility as if he or she were your own. That is key in the Punana Leo; it is not just a preschool education program, this is a family." While Kahuawaiola preps teachers to help Hawaii's students meet and exceed state standards, it is how those standards are pursued that is important for our Hawaii keiki. "The beauty of this is how strategies for meeting standards are integrated with a Hawaiian perspective to impact our keiki." This teacher education program acknowledges the importance of a Hawaiian perspective to impact the education of our students in Hawaii. |
