Wyland's Biggest Project Ever; 205 Canvases Print E-mail
July 02, 2008 07:19 PM

Wyland is a master of marketing as well as an artist. He became famous by giving away huge murals in major cities and that created a market for his regular sized paintings. He's so successful he's part owner of of a Waikiki hotel named after himself and it was here that he announced his biggest project ever, consisting of 205 separate canvases it will be called "Hands Across the Ocean," and it will be painted with the help of thousands of children from around the globe.

"All the canvases will represent all the aquatic life, fresh water and salt water, oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and wetlands will be painted by these children and me, the biggest kid out there," said Wyland.

Wyland plans to complete the mural in Beijing two weeks. He'll work with children from seven countries each morning and kids from seven more countries each afternoon.

"We need an environmental renaissance, and if you're gonna achieve that, you gotta get the kids involved," said Wyland.

That's just one of his new projects. Wyland has also come up with a new image he'll be offering to the state of Hawaii for its special order license plates.

"I'm gonna have an agreement, a written agreement. What I propose is that 80% goes to the state to protect Turtle Bay, the land there," said Wyland.

He's hoping the agreement will prevent a battle like the one he's in with California. Wyland says that over the past 14 years, California has made $41 million using one of his images on license plates, but only $20,000 has gone to his non profit environmental foundation and now that he's asking for 20% of what the plates will earn in the future, California says "no."

"They said we don't have to give you anything, and I said I don't have to give you my art work then," said Wyland.
