Murder-Suicide Father Being Sued Over Money Print E-mail

Police still aren't talking about the motive that drove a father to kill his wife and young son and then himself but we do know Michael James was being sued for thousands of dollars.

Experts said it would be unusual for money trouble alone to trigger such a horrible tragedy but two days after the Mililani-Mauka family was found dead it's the only obvious sign things weren't as perfect as they seemed.

People who knew the James' tell us they were a happy family. They had a new house they bought for more than $700,000. But just because no one saw any problems doesn't mean they weren't there.

Michael James liked money. His MySpace page is all about making more of it. His site pushes 10 in 1 liquid vitamins, Florida lottery tickets you can cash in on without winning and other get rich quick products.

He also claims to be a high stakes gambler. But recently the insurance salesman was losing money. Court documents show Hickam Federal Credit Union filed a lawsuit against him just two weeks ago seeking more than $10,800. And he's been sued by the First Resolution Investment Company for more than $5,000.

For a man who is seemingly obsessed with money is not having enough a motive for violence?

"It's tempting to say that a person who uses drugs is more violent or a person who has financial problems is prone to use domestic violence but really those are not the root causes of domestic violence," said Nanci Kreidman, Domestic Violence Clearinghouse Executive Director.

Kreidman said money is not a root cause but it can be a contributing stressor and everyone responds to stress in different ways.

"Some people over eat, some people don't sleep well, some drink too much, some resort to violence, so it's not a full explanation for why somebody would resort to such a horrible act of violence."

The Domestic Violence Clearinghouse said it does see an increase in calls to the hotline after cases like this and they get more women asking how to get temporary restraining orders because they say victims realize how bad things could get.
