Twenty-four students attending the health professions Summer institute got hands on experience through exercises such as identifying bacteria from stained specimens and performing protein and glucose tests through urine samples to name a few. The program allows students who are interested in the medical field to get a taste. "Most students at this age may not know if they are able to do these skills that are associated with the different health professions. So we are giving them an opportunity to try it out to see if that's what they'd like to do," said Sheri Gon, U.H. Division of Medical Technology. "I'm actually glad that I came because I'm really interested in medical technology and I don't think I would have gotten this sort of experience if I stayed at home," said Maui High School senior Lornalyn Castillo. The program is open to all high school students. Selection is based on those who display promise in the medical industry. |
