The Outrigger Reef Hotel unveiled five new suites that bear very special names. This suite is special as it is named for the constellation Makalii. And it was named by Pwo navigator Shorty Bertelmann. The Outrigger Reef Hotel called upon its relationship with the Friends of Hokulea and Hawaiiloa to name its newest rooms. The suites are named by the five Hawaiian proteges of Satawalese navigator Mau Piailug. Recently, the hotel announced a major fundraising effort to get Hawaiiloa, a canoe carved completely out of wood, back into the ocean. "This canoe was carved from two logs and this skill and artform should be continued and appreciated." The Outrigger Reef Hotel is adding many things that reflect and celebrate its host culture. Mahalo to the Outrigger Reef for continuing to honor our traditional Hawaiian navigators and the constellations they use to find their way. |
