The library has locations on Hawai'i island, Moloka'i, and Kaua'i but the main one is on Keawe street in Kaka'ako. It was established in 1985. Ka Waihona Puke 'Oiwi is just one segment of a three-divison program that includes Ulukau-the Hawaiian digital library and an afterschool program. For program specialists Hilwalani Brown and Kanani Kamai the greatest joy is teaching children through the interschool program. "I truly enjoy helping to fuel their desire for things Hawaiian." "It is a lot of work but the rewards are great when you see the children refining their literacy skills." While there are several waihona puke locations, you can also sign-up for a free library card onling and have books sent to you. Simply put, the mission of the library is to effective and perpetuate the great words of Kamehameha III, "Mine is a literate nation." For more information on Ka Waihona Puke 'Oiwi, visit their website at www.alulike.org. |
