Many think of Hawaii as an archipelago of eight islands. In reality, our state stretches out 140,000 square miles past Niihau. We introduce you to Papahanaumokuakea. Papahanaumokuakea stretches from the Nihoa to Kanemilohai, or Kure atoll. Papahanaumokuakea is comprised of ten islands, atolls, reefs and its associated waters. In 2006, it was designated as a National Monument. But this is not the only thing that makes Papahanaumokuakea special, but the breadth and variety of native species that live and thrive there. "One of its unique qualities is how rich and plentiful the sea life is. There is an abundance of everything from wana and limu to ulua, whales and even seals." The Polynesian Voyaging Society uses these islands to challenge its apprentice navigators. Oral traditions say these islands were the testing ground for seafarers of old. For Hawaiians of today, this place allows us to hold fast to traditions and replenish what has been lost. "This place can provide for all of Hawaii, its oceans and islands." Next week we will introduce you to a few cultural practitioners getting ready for a trip to Papahanaumokuakea. |
