"The victim we found was a male in a black wet suit," said Operation Spc. 1st Class Andrew Reyes of the U.S. Coast Guard. The missing diver was identified by his girlfriend as Goes, who had gone free-diving with four other people about two miles off Waikiki. A fire department spokesperson said the group had a rope attached to a shipwreck in the area and was doing breathing exercises when Goes disappeared just after 3:30 p.m. Friday. On Friday, Goes' friends and girlfriend waited anxiously for word from the search team as divers looked in waters as deep as 100 feet. But it wasn't until this Saturday morning the body was located and recovered. "The conditions were good for searching," said Reyes, "small swell, clear visibility, small white caps. Goes' death is a big blow to local arts. He co-founded Cinema Paradise, an independent film festival and helped open the Next Door night club. His work has also been featured in numerous publications including Honolulu Magazine. Just Friday night, he won an award for his photo essay published in that magazine called "Celebrations" in which he spent a year capturing things that people celebrate. "He was really a passionate photographer," said Kam Napier, editor for Honolulu Magazine, "had a great eye, a spirit of adventure, willing to try just any shot. Goes is originally from Brazil but has lived in Hawaii for 15 years. He leaves behind a young son. Related Story: |
