KGMB9 Weekend Team
First Double Amputee to Compete in Hawaii Ironman Print E-mail

He's already completed a marathon and Olympic distance triathalons, now Scott Rigsby is taking on the Ironman.

He's hoping to be the very first person to complete it without legs.

"I really consider myself an athlete that has some physical challanges," said Rigsby.

Rigsby is a double amputee. He lost his right leg in a car accident when he was eighteen. He tried 26 painful procedures over 12 years to save his other one, but chose to have his left leg also amputated in 1998. But six weeks later he was running again and has never looked back.

"I just feel like I am fulfilling the purpose I was designed for," said Rigsby. "I believe God made me for this race. I believe he made for a time such as this. I can use this ordinary life to do extraordinary things."

He finished more than a dozen triathlons and road races, and knows what it takes to go the distance.

With a different prosthetic for each event, he will swim more than two miles, run for almost 27, and bike more than a hundred miles to reach the finishline.

"People will see me -- a guy crossing the finish line -- and they will think 'wow this is great' and they will think it’s a really an individual achievement but its not," Rigsby said.

Rigsby said it’s with the help of God, technology and his friends and family in Georgia that he is taking on this challenge. He wants to inspire others with physical disabilities, but also the rest of us.

"I want to be an inspiration for the weekend warrior, the couch potato, or somebody who looks at me and says 'Gosh, I can't do an Ironman'. And I say to them, 'Hey listen. You just told a guy with no legs, you can't do an Ironman'," Rigsby said.

Meaning forget the excuses, and get up and on your feet.

Rigsby started his own non-profit foundation that supports physically challenged athletes in their athletic pursuits.

He also counsels soldiers who've returned from war with limb amputations.
