Stacy Sproat Beck grew up here. She watched her father and others stop development of Waipa in the 1980s. Waipa's staff of nine hosts educational visits for schools and community organizations on a weekly basis. "Waipa is a place where people work together to provide food and to just continue learning and being productive." One of its biggest activities is making 500-600 pounds of poi every Tuesday. "I like making poi with everyone because it is fun. Haloa was our first Hawaiian and we need to bring Haloa back into our homes." "We pull kalo and make poi." Taking a walk around this 1,600-acre ahupuaa, you find treasures like this third of mile long auwai, built 300 years ago. It not only provides fresh water for loi, but enjoyment for keiki. "We love to go uka to fetch opae!" For Stacy, it comes full circle. Enjoying the fruits of labor through activism by a previous generation and now sharing her love for this place with the next. Thank you to the Sproat ohana and everyone at Waipa for all they do to protect and preserve this place for generations to come. |
