Bones Fall Onto Main Road During Whale Removal Print E-mail
July 17, 2008 08:13 PM

A freaky detour for Windward Oahu drivers who had to maneuver around whale remains that fell onto the road as they were being transported Thursday. The whale removal on Oahu's North Shore was a big, stinky job on its own, but moving the bones actually created another big mess in Kaneohe. The scooped remains were taken for burial in Kahuku, but the bones were given to Hawaii Pacific University for students to study, but on the way to campus one of the drivers lost part of the load.

Three huge chunks of bone fell from the back of one of the pick up trucks at the intersection of Kahekili Highway and Haiku Road. Police say the bones weren't secured in the truck bed, and slipped out when the driver accelerated at the traffic light.

The awful smell forced some residents out of their homes. The bones were so big they couldn't be lifted. Instead someone had to cut the giant bones up into smaller pieces so HPU students could lift the pieces and throw them back into the vehicle.

HPU officials say it was a difficult job, but they're glad no one was hurt.
