"With our tents and small office, this is our brand new school. It's wonderful and we are excited." The K-12 charter school received a 25-year lease for eleven acres from KCC. They will work in partnership with the College and adjacent Punana Leo to broaden the scope of learning for its families. The three guiding curriculum themes are: the Kauai o Manokalanipo (Kauai Curriculum), Ola Pono (Health and Wellness), and Ke Ala Ike (College and Career Preparation). "We want the students and their families to learn from a perspective grounded in the traditions of their island home." There was such a huge response from interested parents that enrollment is full. "The word spread throughout our island and numerous families enrolled, to the point that now we have a waiting list for entrance." Teachers say they could not have been able to get the school ready without the help of many volunteers. But the school is still waiting for another key element to its success, more high school teachers. Good luck to everyone at Kawaikini! If you would like more information on the school or if you are interested in working as a high school teacher, log onto their Web site at www.kawaikini.com. |
