Handmade Quilts Comfort Families of Fallen Troops Print E-mail

It's a simple act of kindness. A way to give back to families of fallen servicemen and women.

It was taking place in Pearl Harbor Saturday. One thread at a time.

It takes a lot of time, care and love to make these quilts.

"I think a quilt to me represents a personal comfort because it is something that's handmade," said "Home of the Brave" quilter Mary Ruth Hudson.

A handmade tradition dating back to the 1860's, when more than a quarter-million quilts were made to support Civil War soldiers and that tradition lives on.

On Saturday, "Home of the Brave" volunteers are making dozens of quilts for families of fallen troops.

"It's not something you buy off the shelves. There's not one exactly like it. Even though it all looks the same, they are all individual. The sentiment on each square is different," Hudson said.

Every quilt is customized with the soldier's name printed on the back. The quilt is made up of fifteen 12-inch blocks of fabric. Each block with a small white square for people to sign their names and write messages of hope.

"Well it kind of moves you inside your chest. There is always something we want to say to them for what they do...And this is one area that I can do to thank them," said Koolina resident Emma Chinn.

Gov. Linda Lingle has signed on to lend her support. And on this day, so do local boy scouts. It's a small thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It makes me feel sad because they passed away but happy knowing that they were supporting our country. And it helps us to know that these guys, they really love our country," said 9-year-old Aina Haina Boy Scout Emerson Goo.

"I sew quilts for people I love and people I care about. So to sew a quilt for a family of a fallen soldier it just comes naturally even more so from the heart because you want to give to them," Hudson said.

A gift from the heart. A memory for those, the quilts keep alive.
