Honolulu Mayor: The Debate
Wahiawa Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Identified Print E-mail

The Honolulu Medical Examiner has identified the man killed while riding or walking his bicycle along Kamehameha Highway in Central Oahu as David Wayne Aldridge II, 18, of Wahiawa.

Aldridge was riding in the dark before 1:30 a.m Tuesday when he was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Aldridge may have been wearing a helmet. Police found a helmet at the scene. Police have not told us if Aldridge had a light on his bike or if it was equiped with reflectors.

"We have to do our part to be very visible," said Jeffrey Dang, who sells bikes and safety gear at McCully Bicycle & Sporting Goods.

According to the law everyone riding at night must have a white light on the front of their bike and reflectors on the sides and back of their bike.

"Beyond that sometimes we'll recommend some stickers or like a safety vest that you might see city and county people wearing. You know the orange or yellow safety vest," Dang said.

"The first thing we usually recommend is a helmet. That's number one priority," Dang added.

Some bikers choose the sidewalk instead of the street because it gets them farther from traffic, but sidewalks have their dangers too.

"You have to be aware of pedestrians and motorists coming out of driveways. You don't have as much visibility around some of the store fronts," said Mitchell Nakagawa, Executive Director of the Hawaii Bicycling League.

Riding on sidewalks is legal everywhere except in downtown Honolulu and in Waikiki.

"We should be yielding or giving audible signals when we're overtaking pedestrians. And then also that we're traveling as the laws and regulations say under ten miles per hour. If you are traveling over 10 miles per hour you should be either on a bike way or bike route on the street," Nakagawa told KGMB9.

It is important anyone riding a bike knows the rules and regulations, things like never riding against traffic and always using hand signals so drivers know where your going.

The City and County of Honolulu has a brochure full of bicycle safety tips. It is available at the Hawaii Bicycling League or Satellite City Halls.
