"I knew Nainoa when I was living at Kuliouou on the beach and Hui Nalu was doing their practicing right across the canal that went into the bay. And the boys would come around and use my outdoor shower. So I got to know them. Nainoa, Kala Kukea, Bruce Blankenfeld, he was just a kid then. Nainoa was in college. Anyway, I recruited Nainoa into the society, got him interested in sailing. I could tell that he was interested in the stars. We got the Bishop Museum planetarium to let us use the planetarium, set it up for different latitudes so the guys could memorize the stars. The guys would fall asleep because it's dark, you got your head back looking up and pretty soon you'd hear people snoring. But Nainoa was all wide-eyed. I could tell he was really soaking it up so I knew we had a live one there. My affection for him you might say is that of an uncle happy to see his nephew make good." We are grateful to Herb Kawainui Kane for his many great works of art and for helping bring to life our Hawaiian history. |
