"In order to be an artist, you have to have a curiosity about how things look. Historians have published book after book about history, which are mostly words with a few graphics, perhaps, of that period. I followed the same research paths as the historians who use words, but my interest is in how things appeared, what were the visual aspects of some of these events. Trying to understand the poe, kahiko. I always made an effort to see their world through their eyes, how they interpreted their own universe, and what they must have felt like with foreign people, foreign diseases. Battle scenes bothered me to do, because I actually start feeling pain so sometimes I have to put them aside for awhile and try to get back to that. But you have to empathize. That's the key to doing a good piece of historical interpretation in pictorial form. I feel very rewarded and gratified that I've been able to make some contribution." Mahalo to Uncle Herb for sharing some of your stories with us and filling our lives with your colorful works. |
