Archaeologists are always trying to find links to our past through researching the earth. We spoke with one such researcher who hopes to have found a piece of our past. Kekuewa Kikiloi is a doctoral student on his way to getting his Ph.D. in Archaeology. He has been doing fieldwork in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. During his last trip to Nihoa and Mokumanamana, his partner on the trip made an exciting and intriguing discovery.

The artifact they found appears to be the bottom half of an ancient stone ki'i.

Kekuewa says the Northwest Hawaiian Islands are much more than just an extension of the main eight Hawaiian islands. And the artifacts that are buried there are significant.

These expeditions are critical to the perpetuation of our traditional knowledge.
