Hit-&-Run Suspect Released Pending Investigation Print E-mail
August 04, 2008 05:22 PM

A witness reported seeing a vehicle speeding away the night of the crime and police traced a damaged van back to worker Arnel Abuluyan but prosecutors say they need more evidence to charge him with the crime.

Abuluyan was arrested for negligent homicide and failure to render aid. Authorities had until 2:30 p.m. Monday to charge him, but at noon he was released pending further investigation.

Police said a tip led to the 37-year-old's arrest at his house on Saturday.

When KGMB9 stopped by Monday afternoon, no one appeared to be home.

Abuluyan is an installer at Abbey Carpet and flooring. He takes home a white work van.

The company filed a police report for an accident involving the company van the same day David Aldridge Jr. was hit and killed near Dole Plantation.

Neighbors were surprised by Abuluyan's arrest, since police originally gave a different description of the hit-and-run vehicle.

"They said red truck, yeah. Red utility truck, so never even dawn on me that could be him yeah, but then being the neighbor I seen it smashed like that. I just thought maybe he had one fender bender," said Sugar Kalulu.

"I know they've been living here for quite some time as well as us too. As far as like family wise, they're a really quiet family," said Reese Coogan.

A memorial service for Aldridge was held last week at Schofield Barracks. Sunday, another funeral was held in his hometown in Indiana.

The prosecutor's office said before someone is charged, authorities look at whether there is probable cause and can the case be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Right now prosecutors say they need more time to investigate.
