Sailing vast miles across the sea takes great wisdom, courage and leadership. Students who took part in a summer program called Kulia I Ka Pono Kona learned these skills first hand.

The program is sponsored by The Kamehameha Schools in partnership with Na Kalai Wa'a, the stewards of the Makali'i voyaging canoe.

They learn from experienced crew members about the essential skills needed once they are on the canoe.

I learned the importance of caring for one another on the canoe, as an 'ohana. We are responsible for each other.

For some students, once they set foot on Makali'i they knew it would be an experience they would never forget.

Through the fun and laughter they are learning valuable lessons from their ancestors necessary to guiding their future.
