April 2006. A horrific collision on Kunia road. A pickup truck filled with people slams into a cement truck. Four women, farm workers and friends, were killed. Nova Dacquel was driving the pickup. "I'm always alone because of no friends to lean on," she said in court. "The friends that I trust have been taken away." Deputy prosecutor Russell Uehara said Szemkow tried to pass in a no passing zone. The pickup swerved to avoid him. "He snuffed out the lives of four people. He injured eight and he blames them for riding in the back of a pickup truck." Uehara said. The victims' relatives told Szemkow they don't hate him. They're still in mourning. "Until now we still feel that pain," Ricardo Polendey said. His wife, Aquilina, was one of the victims. "I want to express my condolences to the families. And I pray that we all heal from this tragic accident," Szemkow said. The defense said Szemkow was and is still on heavy pain medication for a leg injury. It causes him to shake. Attorney Samuel King, Jr. said it also caused him to black out and his car to swerve. "He didn't know there was an accident," King said. But a witness said she tried to get Szemkow to stop at the scene. He didn't. "The fact that you continued to drive on while another motorist honked her horn at least five times for you to stop is absolutely unacceptable," said circuit court Judge Derrick Chan. A sobbing Szemkow was ordered by Chan to surrender to sheriff's on Friday morning. That's when his prison sentence begins. |
