Republican National Convention
Campaign Officials: Obama Arrives Friday Print E-mail

After 19 months of non-stop campaigning, Sen. Barack Obama's Hawaii vacation begins Friday.

Campaign officials confirm that's the day he will be flying into Hawaii. Sen. Obama is scheduled for least one political event on Aug. 12 at the Kahala Resort. We're told tickets will likely sell out.

Sen. Donna Kim is going to be there and said, "ticket sales are going great, a lot of interest, a lot of support. Getting to see him at the fundraiser and at the convention will just be a memorable event."

There's still no word on a public event, but chances are lots of Oahu drivers will get to see Obama's motorcade. H.P.D. solo bike officers along with Secret Service have been practicing for rolling lockdowns on traffic.

Secret Service said impact on traffic should be minimal on the day of the Aug. 12 fundraiser. As for the other days, there's no schedule during his vacation so they don't know what type of slow-downs drivers can expect.

Meanwhile, crews in Denver, Colorado are hard at work prepping the Pepsi Center for the Democratic event of the year. The Democratic National Convention is in 19 days. There are still lots of details to sort out. That's why Hawaii delegates got together Wedneday. Many of them are just getting to know each other. The meet-and-greet is also to make sure everyone is on the same page before the convention begins Aug. 25.

"When the different events are scheduled, when the Obama speech is scheduled and how we will get to it," said delegate Kate Stanley.

While it's Kate Stanley's first national convention, it'll be the third for Waimanalo resident Albert Lewis, though he says this one should be much more exciting.

"The race that they had in the primary with Clinton and Obama just rejuvenated the interest in going to the convention," Lewis said.
