"Aloha. This is Ka'ea Alapa'i on Ke Ala Hou, our Hawaiian language program." Ka'ea Alapa'i is a disc jockey on Kona's KAPA FM. But her ambitions in radio are two-fold. "The station brought me on to incorporate Hawaiian language into the mix. I thought, 'Of course, it has to be done.' My children were in the Punana Leo at the time and I saw this as a way to help the movement. That was the impetus." Ka'ea also saw that there was a growing interest among listeners, even those who weren't fluent speakers. "I use both Hawaiian and English in my program. People want to listen to the 'olelo and they know they will get some help with translations. It piques their interest and desire to learn." Ka'ea knows that the purpose of this job is larger than just herself and her program. "A personal goal is to bring Hawaiian speaking students in to work and learn with me. It's been my dream to give back to my community like this, sharing the beauty of our language." Ka'ea, who is a full-time kindergarten Hawaiian immersion teacher, is truly grateful for this opportunity to take her aloha for the 'olelo to a broader audience. "The Lord has blessed me with this ability to reach out to the community, beyond those in my classroom." Mahalo to Ka'ea Alapa'i for keeping Hawaiian music and Hawaiian language on the radio for everyone to enjoy. |
