State & City Agree on Iolani Palace Security Print E-mail

Seven people have been charged with the break in at Iolani Palace last Friday evening. Six -- including the self-proclaimed queen -- are charged with burglary. A seventh man has been charged with assault for allegedly pushing a palace worker.

All were released on five-thousand dollars bail.

This comes on the same day as the State and City met to discuss who's responsible for the security of the palace. After that meeting both sides were eager to talk about their agreement to cooperate.

Attorney General Mark Bennett said the agreement was to fight crime together whether the threat is on State, City or private property. "Someone calls 911... there is going to be a response," Bennett said, "and the response will never be " 'That's not our jurisdiction.' "

Mayor Hannemann echoed the attorney general's remarks. "There are no jurisdictional lines," Hanneman insisted. "If a citizen is indeed is in trouble, in harms way, and calls 911, the Honolulu Police Department will respond. It doesn't matter what property it occurs on. It is important for people to know that."

That's not what some say happened Friday. Here's part of a 911 tape transcript:

Caller:" One of our employees was assaulted at the gate, by the group that's taking over. And the HPD officer who was here just left and he refused to help."
Dispatcher: He just left?
Caller: He just left and said it was the responsibility of the State"

Police Chief Boisse Correa said that HPD is continuing to investigate that complaint against a police sergeant. "We're trying to get this thing resolved as soon as possible," the chief told reporters, "cause we wanna make sure that the community has faith in our integrity."

Added Hanneman: "We want to make sure that if in fact there was inappropriate behavior, whatever discipline that needs to be given at that point, we will do that."

Correa went on to explain that since previous demonstrations at the Palace have been peaceful, HPD did not expect this sovereignty group to try to get inside the building. The lack of a perceived threat partly explains why no one was arrested for two and a half hours after the first calls for help. The chief also pointed out that HPD wanted to postpone arrests until there were a large number of officers onsite.

"Usually in the past we had that opportunity. This time we did not," he said. "So once we heard the alarms go off, and they were going into the building, that's the time we said, 'Hey, we can't wait at this point. we're gonna have to go in.' "
