Skyrocketing water bills sparked outrage at a town meeting on Molokai Wednesday night. More than 300 people turned out at the Mitchell Pauole Center Wednesday night. People are upset because their water and sewer rates are either doubling or in some case nearly tripling. The Public Utilities Commission approved the plan after the Molokai Ranch shut down earlier this year and Maui County did not have the resources to operate the system. Community groups have been working on other solutions for water service. But for now, the rate hikes will affect about 1200 residents and will be in effect for six months starting Sept. 1. |
