The Varroa mite, an invasive species, thrives on the blood of honey bees. It's about the size of a pinhead and considered a serious threat to the industry and bee population. It was found for the first time on the Big Island this week near Hilo Harbor. Now, all feral bee hives within a five mile radius of Hilo Bay will be destroyed. If you live in the area, you are asked to report any backyard hives to the state's pest hotline at 643-PEST (7378). Related Links: |
