It happened just before 11-30 this afternoon at the College of Engineering in Holmes Hall. Investigators say a plastic tree caught on fire in one of the drying ovens. Fire officials believe someone left the oven door open. Students were evacuated from the building. "We heard our fire alarms ringing so at that point we departed the building. Ironically enough we had unscheduled fire drill plan for this week. So a lot of us I think initially thought it was the drill," said UH college of engineering spokesman Eric Matsunaga. "There was little fire damage, melted plastic from some of the light fixtures and some of the ceiling tiles were wet," said HFD battalion chief Kenison Tejada. The flames activated the sprinkler system causing water to leak to a downstairs classroom. There was some water damage to the building and equipment. Damages are estimated at $20,000. |
