Holua sledding is said to have been the sport enjoyed by the highest chiefs, the closest thing to surfing on land. Keone Kalawe has been researching the sport for nearly 15 years. It started with a group of friends at the University of Hawaii. With a background in archaeology, Keone is drawn to discovering sites where Hawaiians of old used to practice holua. But this fascination with holua does not stop with research. "It's really fun. I learned to hee holua when I was 11 and it stuck with me ever since." "You need to be careful but it is lots of fun learning. It is something that our kupuna did so I am and learning this as well." Mahalo to the Kalawe men for sharing their work, and play, with us. |
