UH Warriors Gain New Captains Print E-mail

The Warrior Football Team finally touched down in Gainesville, Florida Thursday morning. They wasted little time identifying who will lead them into the swamp.
Coach Greg McMackin decided to take care of one order of business before UH left for Florida on Thursday, he named the team captains for the season, three defensive players and one offensive lineman.

The selections were made by annonymous votes by the entire team.

Defensive Lineman Keala Watson is one of the captains but the Nanakuli grad insists nothing changes with the new title. Every position we have leaders who will get everybody moving, get everybody motivated so, it doesn't really feel like a big job to be a captain on this team.

UH Linebacker Adam Leonard agrees with Watson. He feels his role with the Warriors is to be consistent in words and in actions.

"I think I gotta just continue what I been doing," Leonard says. "Speak up when I feel I need to, as far as when something needs to be addressed, and at the end of the day just go out there and work hard."

Fellow Linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who returns as UH's leading tackler, embraces the leadership role as a way of reaching teammates on a personal level, especially off the field.

"When there's a problem in the locker room, you know outside of football, it's something that the coach can't be micro-managing every time there's problems," Elimimian says. "So, it's something that we have to take upon ourselves."

John Estes is the only underclassman and the only offensive player to make captain. The junior believes his position will open up a lot of opportunities to speak out.

"Being the Center, especially making all the calls and stuff, you just gotta know my stuff," Estes says, "and especially in the huddle on the offensive side when we gotta calm the guys down.

Coach Mac said he put no grade or position requirement for this years captains, he just said he asked the players to choose a person who would lead by example.
