NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Gustav has weakened to a tropical storm as it crosses central Louisiana. The National Hurricane Center says the storm's maximum sustained winds have dropped to about 60 mph. At 11 p.m. EDT, the storm was located about 20 miles southwest of Alexandria, and it was moving at about 13 mph. Gustav arrived with 110-mph winds and storm surge that had water splashing over the top of the floodwall of the Industrial Canal along the 9th Ward in New Orleans. But the hurricane's wind and surge haven't been nearly as fearsome as forecasters had predicted. Forecasters expect Gustav to decrease to a tropical depression on Tuesday and its storm surge flooding to subside. |
