2,900 Mile Row for a Cause; A Million Strokes Print E-mail

One million: that's the number of strokes it took Roz Savage to row from San Francisco to Honolulu. She is trying to be the first woman to row across the Pacific Ocean and Monday she completed the long first leg of her voyage.

Savage was a successful businesswoman in England but she wasn't fulfilled. Now she is off on a grueling and dangerous journey all for the environment.

Savage rowed 12 hours a day for 99 straight days crossing 2,900 miles before finally reaching Honolulu.

She was handed a glass of champagne when she stepped off her 24 foot rowboat, but on her voyage she lived on dried fruits and veggies and Larabars. To pass the time she listened to 62 audio books. Along the way there were some scary moments like when she realized she could run out of drinking water.

"Certainly opening up the hatch where my water maker lives and discovering it full of water that was a low moment because I realized then the water maker would start corroding and stop working and the water maker is my lifeline," said Roz Savage.

She risked it all for the environment. The businesswoman turned activist wants to raise awareness about plastics and the damage they are doing to the ocean and the planet.

"It's taken me about a million strokes to get here from California, and if I'd have stood there in San Francisco and said well one oar stroke isn't going to make any difference then I’d still be standing in San Francisco, but I've demonstrated by putting one oar stroke after another that every tiny little action adds up to something really substantial," said Savage.
Savage feels the same can be said for people and doing their part to help the environment. She says we can't wait for governments or businesses to change, it's up to the individuals.

"People will notice if you're in the grocery store with your reusable grocery bag and they'll notice and maybe change their behavior as well, the ripple do spread and all those tiny little actions even though they may seem insignificant really, really do add up and make a difference so everyone has the power to make a difference for the better," said Savage,

Savage will participate in a Kahuku Beach cleanup this Thursday at 2:45 – 5:15.

She's not done rowing. She plans to be the first woman to row solo across the Pacific Ocean. Her next voyage begins in about six months when she will row from Hawaii to the South Pacific.
