"So you're looking for something that stands out in a vast expanse," Honolulu Fire Dept. Capt. Terry Seelig said. It's a big area -- about 45 square miles, starting about five miles off the southern coastline near Sand Island. The chopper went down in 1,600 foot seas. The Coast Guard, fire department and DLNR split the search site into sections, moving methodically over open water. "As currents push things along the area will change," Seelig said. "That doesn't mean that the area prior searched will be left alone. There will be a secondary search." At 10 a.m. Friday, the Coast Guard cutter Kiska returned to Honolulu Harbor carrying a grim cargo, a large section of the helicopter. Throughout the day, salvage operations turned up bits and pieces of the fuselage. "We just have to make sure that we keep track of where we've covered and look for the clues that are going to lead us to hopefully a result," Seelig said. |
