Eye on Economy - Airline Arrival Numbers Print E-mail

The newest figures on fall airline capacity show fewer seats to Hawaii.

The monthly state report also shows a shift in service, with more service from certain cities.

Capacity through November comes out to one planeload more than two million seats, down 14 percent from the same three months last year. Some islands are hit more than others.

Cuts in capacity, mostly from West Coast cities, affect Maui twice as much as the rest of the state. Kauai is actually getting more seats than last year, bringing timeshare owners.

Capacity from Oakland and Vegas plummeted after aloha and ata died, but now we're seeing cutbacks from Portland, Phoenix and Sydney, slightly offset by Alaska Air's new airlift from Seattle and the Hawaiian air service from the Philippines.

Hotels want to fill more rooms and don't care where the guests come from. But tourism liaison Marsha Weinert says the overall industry needs to rebuild tourist traffic from all over, especially routes that are at risk to additional cuts.
